What is SkyFile ransomware? And how does it execute its attack?
SkyFile ransomware is a crypto virus detected at the beginning of April 2018. According to security experts, this crypto virus is filled with Russian debug logs and contains a command called “Attack” that exploits the EternalBlue. This kind of activity is not unheard of as it was also used by infamous ransomware threats like WannaCry ransomware before. Thankfully, SkyFile ransomware is not as dangerous as WannaCry ransomware as its code indicates that it is most likely developed by amateur cyber crooks. Even so, this ransomware shouldn’t be taken lightly as it can still leave your files inaccessible. It might target files with the following extensions:

After finding files with the above mentioned extensions, SkyFile ransomware will start the encryption process using the AES cipher and append the .sky extension to the affected files. It then drops several malicious files such as the “SkyFile Decryptor.exe”, “skyfile.exe” and “HOW TO DECRYPT.txt”. The SkyFile Decryptor.exe, once clicked, will open a window that states:
“Oops, your files have been encrypted. Such as: photos, videos, documents, etc. To decrypt your files, read HOW TO DECRYPT.txt”
While the ransom note in the HOW TO DECRYPT.txt contains the following content:
“Oops, all your files have been encrypted =(
To decrypt your files, write to me at the e-mail: [email protected]
Your data for decryption:
Private ID: ***
Private Key: *****”
As pointed out, there is no need for you to panic if you are one of the victims of this ransomware threat as it is not as dangerous as it seems and you can recover your encrypted files without having to spend a cent.
How does SkyFile ransomware disseminate its malicious payload?
SkyFile ransomware might disseminate its malicious payload in so many ways including remote desktop applications or RDP, spam email attachments, drive-by download, fake software updates, and other social engineering tactics.
To wipe out SkyFile ransomware from your system, use the instructions given below and make sure you follow them religiously.
Step 1: The first thing you need to do is to obliterate the process of SkyFile ransomware by opening the Task Manager – simply tap the Ctrl + Shift + Esc keys on your keyboard.
Step 2: After that, click the Processes tab and look for any suspicious-looking process that takes up most of your CPU’s resources and is most likely related to SkyFile ransomware and then end its processes.
Step 3: Now that the malicious process is eliminated, close the Task Manager.
Step 4: Next, tap Win + R, type in appwiz.cpl and click OK or tap Enter to open Control Panel’s list of installed programs.
Step 5: Under the list of installed programs, look for SkyFile ransomware or anything similar and then uninstall it.
Step 6: Then close Control Panel and tap Win + E keys to launch File Explorer.
Step 7: Navigate to the following locations below and look for SkyFile ransomware’s malicious components like “SkyFile Decryptor.exe”, “skyfile.exe” and “HOW TO DECRYPT.txt” as well as other suspicious files it has created and downloaded into the system and then delete all of them.

Step 8: Close the File Explorer.

Step 11: Delete the registry keys and sub-keys created by SkyFile ransomware.
Step12. Close the Registry Editor and empty the Recycle Bin.
Try to recover your encrypted files using the Shadow Volume copies
Restoring your encrypted files using Windows’ Previous Versions feature will only be effective if SkyFile ransomware hasn’t deleted the shadow copies of your files. But still, this is one of the best and free methods there is, so it’s definitely worth a shot.
To restore the encrypted file, right-click on it and select Properties, a new window will pop-up, then proceed to Previous Versions. It will load the file’s previous version before it was modified. After it loads, select any of the previous versions displayed on the list like the one in the illustration below. And then click the Restore button.
