If you ever fantasized about combining an open world game like DayZ with a universe like Jurassic Park, then I have some good news for you. A game called Ark: Survival Evolved will let you explore an open world filled with deadly dinosaurs.
The game is currently in development and scheduled for release in summer 2016 on PS4, PC, and Xbox One. It’s being developed by a company called Wildcard.
Wildcard claims to be made up of veteran designers, although the company hasn’t said which games, exactly, the team has worked in.
In the game’s official release announcement on Facebook, The team did say they were inspired by big dinosaur movies like The Land Before Time, Jurassic Park, and Dinotopia.
In any case, the goal with Ark: Survival Evolved is to make “one of the most ambitious hardcore large-scale survival experiences ever devised.”
The game runs on Unreal Engine 4 and will feature full mod support on PC. The game’s first trailer was created from “live online gameplay”, so rest assured that this isn’t some pre-rendered over-hyped video:
I don’t know about you, but I think that looks pretty amazing. The initial Facebook announcement revealed some key features with the game, including:
-Build a base and try to defend it against dangerous dinosaurs like the T-Rex
-You get to explore the “primeval world of ARK”
-The game is filled with dinosaurs and other extinct creatures
-You can tame pretty much all of the dinosaurs. Not all dinosaurs are immediately hostile.
-You can tame dinosaurs like the Stegosaurus and Pterodactyl and then ride around on them
The developers have answered an exhaustive list of questions about the game here.
In that FAQ, they’ve explained that the game will never be pay to win. Monetization will come from the game’s initial sales and possible future expansion packs. There will also be cosmetic skin items, but they will all be earnable through in-game rewards.
The game has two modes: local single player mode and online multiplayer mode. Multiplayer will have full PvP.
You can also build underwater bases, and in the future, you can unlock a science fiction tech tier to expand your base with some futuristic weapons.
This game sounds awesome.
Early Access PC Version Will Release in June 2015
Summer 2016 is a long time to wait for a game you’re excited about. Fortunately, PC gamers are scheduled to receive an early access copy of the game in June 2015.
Survival Evolved will release an alpha version in June on Steam. Unlike some alpha versions, you’ll be able to get the Steam code for free. You’ll receive updates right up to the game’s release, although it doesn’t seem like you’ll get the final game for free.
According to the FAQs, early access people will receive “exclusive in-game goodies that we’ll be unveiling in the weeks ahead.”
The only problem with early access is that some games never seem to leave it. Let’s hope Survival Evolved can avoid that trap and make the game as awesome as it looks in the trailer above.
