What is Hermes837 ransomware? And how does it execute its attack?

Hermes837 Ransomware

Hermes837 ransomware is a new file-encrypting virus that uses a “.hermes837” extension in marking the files it encrypts, hence the name. Its first activity was spotted between the end of August 2019 and the first half of September 2019. It isn’t clear yet what type of encryption algorithm it uses but one thing’s for sure, it uses a sophisticated cipher since you wouldn’t be able to access affected files once Hermes837 ransomware encrypts them.

Once it is able to infect a computer, Hermes837 ransomware, its payload file will be executed in the system. After dropping its malicious payload, this crypto-malware connects the infected computer to a remote server where it downloads more malicious files and places them on system folders. It then applies a data gathering module used to gather data about the user and the computer. The malicious files that were downloaded earlier along with the data obtained are used for another module called stealth protection.

This allows Hermes837 ransomware to execute its attack without detection from any security or antivirus programs installed in the system. It also modifies some registry keys and entries in the Windows Registry such as:

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\
  • HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop\
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

Once all the modifications are carried out, Hermes837 ransomware will begin encrypting its targeted files. As it starts data encryption, it uses a sophisticated encryption algorithm and appends the “.hermes837” extension to every affected file. After the completion of data encryption, it opens a text file named “!!!READ_ME!!!.txt” which contains the following message:

“ALL YOUR DATA WAS ENCRYPTED
Whats Happen?
