The infamous Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) has been the standard error message in Windows operating systems for years. It can indicate a number of different problems with your PC. Usually, a BSOD occurs suddenly while you’re on the computer, and the error messages can be frustratingly vague.
Google your error message: It is rare to experience an error that nobody else has ever had before. So, the first step should be to Google your error message. Since the BSOD effectively locks up most functions of your PC, you will not be able to take a picture of your screen. For that reason, you may need to physically write this error message down, especially if it contains a lot of numbers. Get a pen and notepad.
Hopefully, Google will direct you to PC support forums where experts have already dealt with and solved the problem.
Device error: Often, a BSOD occurs due to a corrupt device driver, or other problems with your components. To see if this is the case, open up your computer and disconnect any unnecessary components. If you have multiple sticks of RAM, test each one at the same time.
Safe mode: Entering safe mode can be an effective way to stop a BSOD from occurring. This disables many of the processes in Windows which can cause trouble. To enter safe mode, press F8 during the operating system’s startup screen. Sometimes, simply starting the computer in safe mode, and then rebooting it into its normal mode, will completely fix your problem.
However, while in safe mode, you can also access a number of other ways to fix your PC, including system restore points, disk checks, and other handy tools. This may be a good point to do a quick virus check, or clear some of the old browser files from your PC, both of which can cause error messages to appear.
Overheating: Sometimes, Windows will deliver a vague error message after a device overheats. If you were playing a game immediately before the BSOD appeared, it may be a result of your video card overheating. To prevent this, clean out the inside of your case and check the fans on both your components and the case.
Corrupt drivers or operating system files: Sometimes, the Blue Screen of Death appears when a certain key file is corrupt. To fix this BSOD error, you may need to take more drastic measures, like repairing your installation of Windows.
