What is Eman ransomware? And how does it carry out its attack?

Eman ransomware is a new crypto-malware that also happens to be the latest variant of Matrix ransomware. It follows NEWRAR ransomware which was released not too long ago. Nothing much has changed in this new variant except for the extension it uses to mark encrypted files which are now .eman as well as its ransom note.

Eman Ransomware

Once it carries out its attack, Eman ransomware will drop its malicious payload in the system (nwovkcyl.exe). Upon the execution of the payload file, Eman ransomware will connect the infected computer to a remote server controlled by the attackers. After establishing a connection, it makes modifications in the Windows Registry so that it can run on every system boot. It also downloads additional malicious files in the system folders. These files along with the data gathered about the system and the user are then used for stealth protection which allows the crypto-malware to execute its attack without any interruption from any security programs.

After the system modifications, Eman ransomware will start encrypting its targeted files using both AES and RSA ciphers. Following data encryption, it adds .eman suffix to each one of the encrypted files and releases its ransom note, #README_EMAN#.rtf, which contains a quite lengthy message stating:

How does Eman ransomware proliferate?

Eman ransomware proliferates via malicious spam email campaigns just like other Matrix variants. Crooks attach a malicious file in emails and send them to potential victims using spambots. The malicious file may be an executable file, ZIP file, PDF file, or document which contains malicious scripts used to run Eman ransomware in the system. Thus, you must not open suspicious-looking emails no matter who the sender is.

Obliterate Eman ransomware using the removal instructions given below.

Step_1: Tap Ctrl + Shift + Esc keys to launch the Task Manager.

Step_2: Go to the Processes tab and look for the malicious processes of Eman ransomware like nwovkcyl.exe then right-click on it and select End Process or End Task.

Step_3: Close the Task Manager and open Control Panel by pressing the Windows key + R, then type in “appwiz.cpl” and then click OK or press Enter.

Step_4: Look for dubious programs that might be related to Eman ransomware and then Uninstall it/them.

Step_5: Close Control Panel and then tap Win + E to launch File Explorer.

Step_6: After opening File Explorer, navigate to the following directories below and look for Eman ransomware’s malicious components such as the nwovkcyl.exe, #README_EMAN#.rtf, [random].exe, and other suspicious-looking files and then erase them all.

  • %TEMP%
  • %APPDATA%
  • %DESKTOP%
  • %USERPROFILE%\Downloads
  • C:\ProgramData\local\

Try to recover your encrypted files using their Shadow Volume copies

Restoring your encrypted files using Windows Previous Versions feature will only be effective if Eman ransomware hasn’t deleted the shadow copies of your files. But still, this is one of the best and free methods there is, so it’s definitely worth a shot.

To restore the encrypted file, right-click on it and select Properties, a new window will pop up, then proceed to Previous Versions. It will load the file’s previous version before it was modified. After it loads, select any of the previous versions displayed on the list like the one in the illustration below. And then click the Restore button.
