The X Games are the world’s largest extreme sporting event. For years, they’ve showcased the world’s top talents in skateboarding, BMX, snowboarding, and other extreme events.
And as any gamer knows, there’s nothing more extreme than sitting on your couch with a 2L bottle of Mountain Dew and a controller in your hands playing online Call of Duty.
That’s right: Call of Duty is officially joining the X Games. This summer’s X Games will take place in Austin, Texas and for the first time in history, video games will be represented at the X Games.
MLG is partnering with the X Games and sending the world’s best Call of Duty: Ghosts players to the event.
The world’s top 8 Call of Duty: Ghosts teams will appear at the X Games Austin, including the three final teams from the 2014 Call of Duty Championships and the top 5 teams from the Call of Duty: Ghosts leaderboards.
The three final teams include CompLexity, EnVyUs and OpTic Gaming, three teams who clearly have no regard for correct capitalization.
This is the mainstream exposure MLG has been craving for quite some time. Who knows if video games will ever become a popular televised sporting event, but this is the opportunity MLG needs to attract a mainstream audience.
MLG has been waiting for this opportunity for a long time. We’ll see if MLG can capitalize on its sudden popularity to become as mainstream as former fringe sports like skateboarding and snowboarding.
