Windows XP died on April 8, 2014. That was the day Microsoft picked as the last Windows XP update ever.
Except it wasn’t, really.
Microsoft has suspended updates for regular Windows XP users, which means those users are prone to security threats, exploits, malware, and other serious problems.
However, governments around the world have decided to pay Microsoft millions of dollars to continue receiving security updates instead of updating the operating systems on their computers. These users will continue to receive updates for the next three years.

Now, a new report says that you don’t have to pay millions of dollars to get the XP support you need. Apparently, a new Windows XP registry hack lets you overcome the end of Windows XP’s support and continue receiving updates until 2019 – which should give you lots of time to find a new computer.
That news comes from BetaNews.com, which has explained the specific registry hack you need to enter. Although these are unconfirmed reports, the hack appears to work.
After entering the hack, your Windows XP system will continue receiving updates through Windows Embedded Industry (also known as Windows Embedded POSReady). That’s the same version of Windows XP that runs on ATMs and Point Of Sale (POS) systems across the country. Microsoft wisely decided to continue supporting these systems instead of suspending updates.

Here’s how to do it:
Step 1) Create a new text document and save it as XP.reg
Step 2) Double check to make sure the file is saved as a ‘.reg’ file and not as a ‘.txt’ (sometimes it will save as a .reg.txt file, which is not what you want)
Step 3) If you can’t see t
he file, then don’t panic. Open any folder and go to Tools > Folder Options, then click View and check the Show Hidden Files and Folders button.
Step 4) Right-click the .reg file and click Edit, then paste the following lines into the file:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\WPA\PosReady]
“Installed”=dword:00000001
Save the file and then double click on it to instantly make changes to your Windows Registry. That’s it! Your computer will now download XP updates.

Basically, this hack tells Microsoft that your computer is an ATM or Point of Sale machine and that it should continue delivering security updates to protect your system.
Of course, the consequences of telling Microsoft that your PC is actually an ATM are unknown.
