I was able to start my computer in safe mode which gave mehope that I could double check my previous backups which were good.   My heart then sank when I realized last timeI was at home I had taken most of my software into the house.   Now what?  We were on our way to Saskatchewan, Canada and I knew nothing could bedone till we came back out.   As I drove Ithought of all the things I had to have our computer for.   I use our computer to track all of ourfinances, I use our computer to know what our settlements are, I use ourcomputer to pay bills and to pay ourselves.  I use our computer to set up talk shoe conference calls we have eachweek, and the list continues.   We are notplanning on going home till June and I needed another plan.   We were parked at the TA in Rogers, MN and Iwas out walking and thinking and walked right by a Best Buy.   Wow, Geek Squad might have an idea to help meso I stopped in.   I met the nicest youngguy and I explained my problem to him.  No reference disks are really a problem.  When I explained what my computer was doing he felt as if my Vista hadbecome corrupt and I needed to reinstall and wipe my computer clean.   He then thought for a minute and said youknow you could upgrade to Windows 7 and that should fix the problem.   The best part was when he said bring youcomputer in and I will look at it and have it fixed for you today with all ofyour drivers!   Talk about filling me withhope.   I trotted back to the truck andgathered up my computer and with a smile on my face I trotted back to the BestBuy.   As you can see since I am back toblogging he was able to fix my computer and it actually acts as if it is brandnew!   When I go home I will gather myCD’s up with a special folder and they will not leave the truck again.   I am very thankful that I do regular backupsto my external hard drive as I did not lose much.   What I did lose though was many of my emailsI have categorized over time.   I have tocome up with a better plan to save information I need from my emails for thefuture!   Even though it is raining rightnow my heart is light and the future looks bright once again thanks to GeekSquad.

07 May 2010, 16:49 Yeah. The “Blue Screen of Death”. As a network administrator in my pastlife, I dealt with it a lot.

I never switched to Vista. At the time I was working as a Project Managerfor a software company and Microsoft wouldn’t support older versions ofSQL. So, I stayed with XP.

I have a laptop that was my life. After dropping it many times and thendealing with a dog that loved the taste of the power cord, I invested in aNetbook. I use that most of the time because it is small and convenientfor my van. I carry the larger laptop despite the screen wanting to falloff. It still does a good job playing movies.

I back up crucial data to an SD card and can use that in the other computerif one of them dies. Both the laptop and netbook have the sameapplications. My email is stored on Yahoo so that I never have to worryabout backing it up.

I’m anxious to find out how Windows 7 is. I may upgrade some day if itworks well. Good luck with the new OS.

08 May 2010, 10:42 Chet,

This was a little different then the blue screen of death as it left me alittle hope! I was thankful I was able to have one more chance to get a fewmore files saved. One of the interesting facts was my Quicken backups. Ihave more then one file and when I did a backup it only backed up the fileI was using. Lucky for me I did a backup often in each file so I only hada little catch up to do. So far I like Windows 7 and I feel as if I have anew computer with great speed.
I am very thankful that I backup on my external hard drive as it was soeasy to just open up my files and continue. I have to now figure out how toorganize my important emails as that system sure did not work for me whenmy computer crashed.
Thanks for your comments and thoughts.
