What is Matrix ransomware? And how does it implement its attack?

Matrix ransomware is a file-encrypting malware that was first discovered in 2016 in the form of a fake FBI warning. After that, its developers were silent for a while but came back again in 2017 with a new version. And now apparently, its developers are feeling quite productive as they release a new variant of the Matrix ransomware in April 2018.
This new version of Matrix ransomware is installed via Remote desktop services and is a more advanced ransomware with more debugging messages and usage of a cipher to wipe free space in infected computers. Once it is able to infiltrate a system, it will open two windows that will display the status of the infection. When the files are already encrypted, it will append the.[[email protected]] extension to each one of them and drops its ransom note in a file named “ReadMe_To_Decrypt_Files.txt” which contains quite a lengthy ransom note that states:
“WHAT HAPPENED WITH YOUR FILES?
Your documents, databases, backups, network folders and other important files are encrypted with RSA-2048 and AES-128 ciphers.

  • %APPDATA%
  • %TEMP%
  • %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\
  • %USERPROFILE%\Downloads
  • %USERPROFILE%\Desktop

Step 11: Close the File Explorer.
Before you proceed to the next steps below, make sure that you are tech savvy enough to the point where you know exactly how to use and navigate your computer’s Registry. Keep in mind that any changes you make will highly impact your computer. To save you the trouble and time, you can just use [product-name], this system tool is proven to be safe and excellent enough that hackers won’t be able to hack into it. But if you can manage Windows Registry well, then, by all means, go on to the next steps.
Step 12: Tap Win + R to open Run and then type in regedit in the field and tap enter to pull up Windows Registry.

Step 13: Navigate to the listed paths below and look for the registry keys and sub-keys created by Matrix ransomware.
