What is 24H ransomware? And how does it carry out its attack?

24H ransomware is a file-encrypting virus which is a test version of a new threat. Although it has been reported that there was a victim whose computer was infected with this new crypto-malware so even if it’s still a test version, 24H ransomware should not be taken lightly as it could still progress to a very dangerous crypto-malware once its developers update it. Since this threat is still a test version, security experts noted that the only malicious component of 24H ransomware is its ransomware engine. However, it can still be modified to include other malicious components as well.
Like a typical ransomware infection, 24H ransomware will start to carry out its attack by dropping more malicious files in the computer which aides it in its attack. These malicious files may be dropped in Windows system folders. It could also launch and repress processes in the Windows environment so that it can freely execute its attack without any interruptions from programs installed in the system. Moreover, modifications in the Registry could also be done in order to achieve persistence. After these changes are made, it will scan the system looking for files with the following extensions:

How does 24H ransomware spread online?
Creators of 24H ransomware might use spam emails to spread this crypto-virus online. Therefore, you have to be cautious in downloading attachments or clicking links from your emails as you could chance upon an encounter with the malicious payload of 24H ransomware.
For 24H ransomware elimination, you need to use the removal steps below.
Step 1: Tap Ctrl + Shift + Esc keys to launch the Task Manager.
Step 2: Go to the Processes and Applications tab and look for the malicious processes of 24H ransomware then right click on them and select End Process or End Task.

Step 3: Close the Task Manager and open Control Panel by pressing the Windows key + R, then type in appwiz.cpl and then click OK or press Enter.
Step 4: Look for dubious programs that might be related to 24H ransomware and then Uninstall it/them.

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\ScreenSaveTimeOut
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop

Step 10: Next, delete the registry keys and sub-keys created by 24H ransomware.
Step 11: Close the Registry Editor.
Step 12: Finally, empty the contents of your Recycle Bin.
Try to recover your encrypted files using the Volume Shadow copies
Restoring your encrypted files using Windows’ Previous Versions feature will only be effective if 24H ransomware hasn’t deleted the shadow copies of your files. But still, this is one of the best and free methods there is, so it’s definitely worth a shot.
To restore the encrypted file, right-click on it and select Properties, a new window will pop-up, then proceed to Previous Versions. It will load the file’s previous version before it was modified. After it loads, select any of the previous versions displayed on the list like the one in the illustration below. And then click the Restore button.
