Earlier this week, Apple unveiled a new lineup of iPads and iMacs. We’re not going to talk about Apple’s new tablets – which are virtually identical to the previous generation.
But we are going to talk about Apple’s new iMac display. The new 27-inch iMac features a Retina display with “5K” technology.
Apple isn’t kidding: the new iMac has a resolution of 5120×2880 for a total of 14.7 million pixels.
That’s 7 times more pixels than a typical 1080p HDTV or computer monitor. Amazingly, it’s also 67% more pixels than 4K monitors, which is why Apple is calling this “the world’s highest resolution display.”
Like most Apple products, the iMac doesn’t come cheap. The most bare-bones iMac costs $2,499 and has an Intel Core i5 clocked at 3.5GHz. Other tech specs include 8GB of RAM and 1TB of Fusion Drive (mixed SSD/HDD) storage.

Powering all those pixels is an AMD Radeon R9 M290X graphics card which offers “45% faster graphics” than previous iMac models.
Of course, all that power won’t let you play very many computer games. I don’t know about you, but if I’m spending $3,000 on a computer, it’s gotta be able to play Grand Theft Auto V maxed out.
You can upgrade the iMac to higher specs, including a Core i7 clocked to 4.0Ghz.

Not as expensive as many predicted

Today, 4K displays cost between $600 and $6,000 – depending on how large you want it to be. Considering that, it’s surprising that Apple was able to offer the iMac for just $2,499.
I went through the pleasure of fully speccing out the iMac with all its bonus software and hardware options and the total price tag only came to $8,594.87.

That’s still a lot of money to spend on a computer. But if you’re shopping around for ultra high-resolution displays, the price of the iMac may be temping to some.
What do you think? Is the new iMac enough to make you switch to Mac? Or are you happy using your 4K monitors and HD monitors on PC?
In any case, the new iMac is available to order starting today.
