Some of the coolest Windows 8 features get overlooked due to the other faults of the operating system.
One of those features is the ability to create a portable Wi-Fi hotspot wherever you take your Windows 8 PC.
This is useful if you have an Ethernet internet connection on your PC and want to share your internet with your home and avoid buying a Wi-Fi router. It’s also useful if you want to temporarily add another device to a certain Wi-Fi network without taking the time to grant each specific device the permission it needs.
Today, I’m going to show you how to create a Wi-Fi hotspot in Windows 8:
Step 1) Open a command prompt by pressing Windows Key + R at the same time
Step 2) Type the following command into the prompt and press OK: ncpa.cpl
Step 3) this will open your network connections. Right-click on the internet connection you want to share and click on Properties.
Step 4) Click on the Sharing tab and check the box beside Allow other network users to connect through trhis computer’s internet connection
Step 5) Launch an admin command prompt by right-clicking on the bottom left corner of your screen.
Step 6) Type the following command into that prompt:
netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=”pick-any-name “ key=”pick-any-password”
windows 8 tips
You can use anything for the SSID and any key for the password.
Step 7) Now, you’ve created your network and setup access credential information. It’s time to start broadcasting the network so people can connect. Too do that, type the following command into the same admin command prompt:
netsh wlan start hostednetwork
That’s it! Once you’ve entered that last command, your network will appear just like any other wireless network. You can connect to it using the credentials listed above.
Obviously, the tips listed above are slightly more hidden than most Windows 8 features. Still, setting up your wireless internet hotspot in Windows 8 is relatively easy once you know a few simple command prompts.
It’s important to note that this won’t replace your wireless internet router. Your router is a specialized device dedicated to interpreting ingoing and outgoing internet information. Your Windows 8 PC fulfills a bunch of other roles, which means it can’t focus solely on processing internet information. Your wireless router will provide faster connection speeds than your Windows 8 PC, but this is still a great trick if you need internet access in a pinch.
