What is BlackHeart ransomware? And how does it carry out its attack?
BlackHeart ransomware is a new crypto-malware discovered at the end of April 2018. This new crypto-malware is also known as BlackRouter ransomware. It spreads as malicious files named “SF.exe”, “TR.exe” or “BLACKROUTER.exe”. Based on the analysis done on this threat, it is proven that all of the aforementioned files carry the malicious payload of BlackHeart ransomware. Moreover, its source code also showed that this file-encrypting malware is a variant of the recently released Spartacus ransomware.
The moment is infiltrates a system, it will begin to carry out its attack by modifying system files as well as the Windows Registry so it can run on every system boot. Such modifications could also result in the inability to start some software in the system or some Windows functions – needless to say, the computer’s overall performance will be greatly affected. After that, BlackHeart ransomware will begin to encrypt files. Just like Spartacus ransomware, it also targets files with these extensions:
.PNG .PSD .PSPIMAGE .TGA .THM .TIF .TIFF .YUV .AI .EPS .PS .SVG .INDD .PCT .PDF .XLR .XLS .XLSX .ACCDB .DB .DBF .MDB .PDB .SQL .APK .APP .BAT .CGI .COM .EXE .GADGET .JAR .PIF .WSF .DEM .GAM .NES .ROM .SAV CAD Files .DWG .DXF GIS Files .GPX .KML .KMZ .ASP .ASPX .CER .CFM .CSR .CSS .HTM .HTML .JS .JSP .PHP .RSS .XHTML. DOC .DOCX .LOG .MSG .ODT .PAGES .RTF .TEX .TXT .WPD .WPS .CSV .DAT .GED .KEY .KEYCHAIN .PPS .PPT .PPTX ..INI .PRF Encoded Files .HQX .MIM .UUE .7Z .CBR .DEB .GZ .PKG .RAR .RPM .SITX .TAR.GZ .ZIP .ZIPX .BIN .CUE .DMG .ISO .MDF .TOAST .VCD SDF .TAR .TAX2014 .TAX2015 .VCF .XML Audio Files .AIF .IFF .M3U .M4A .MID .MP3 .MPA .WAV .WMA Video Files .3G2 .3GP .ASF .AVI .FLV .M4V .MOV .MP4 .MPG .RM .SRT .SWF .VOB .WMV 3D .3DM .3DS .MAX .OBJ R.BMP .DDS .GIF .JPG .CRX .PLUGIN .FNT .FON .OTF .TTF .CAB .CPL .CUR .DESKTHEMEPACK .DLL .DMP .DRV .ICNS .ICO .LNK .SYS .CFG
Following data encryption, BlackHeart ransomware marks the encrypted files with either .BlackRouter or .pay2me file extensions and drops a file named “ReadME-BLackHeart.txt” that contains the following message:
“All your data has been locked us. You want to return? Contact to:
vahidkhazl23@qmail.com Your Personal key:
Vz**********************************************q==”
In addition, this crypto-malware also institutes a lock-screen instance that contains this message:
“Personal Key: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXx
Warning: Please Don’t Restart or Shutdown Your PC, if do it Your Personal Files Permanently Crypted.
For Decrypt Your Personal Just Pay 200$ or 0.024 BTC. After Pay, You Can send a personal key to EMail:

How are the malicious files of BlackHeart ransomware disseminated?
The malicious files of BlackHeart ransomware, namely, SF.exe, TR.exe, and BLACKROUTER.exe, are distributed using spam emails. Cybercrooks often disguise the malware-laden emails to lure users into opening them and downloading the infected attachment. So it’s better if you delete any suspicious-looking emails the moment you spot them.
